Types Of Wrinkles

There are two main types of wrinkles or creases. Dynamic and static wrinkles. Below is a description of each type of wrinkle.

Dynamic Wrinkles

Wrinkles that can happen at all ages due to repeated facial movements are dynamic wrinkles. These types of wrinkles are temporary.

Dynamic expression lines form when your facial muscles create lines from muscle contractions and repeated facial expressions. However, these lines eventually disappear.

These creases will form when you laugh, smile, squint or frown often during the day. But, after a night’s sleep they will be gone by the morning.

Static Wrinkles

Static wrinkles do not come and go. These creases stay with you unless treated. Decreasing skin elasticity and the loss of gravity are common signs of static wrinkles.

For example, smile lines are referred to as static wrinkles because they are caused by the loss of proteins collagen and elastin. One these proteins decrease, your skin is unable to reform back into place.

What Are The Names Of Different Face Wrinkles?

From the two main categories of wrinkles, there are seven different types. These wrinkles can be either permanent or temporary. The following is a list of the seven main facial wrinkles.

  1. Crow’s Feet
  2. Laugh Lines
  3. Elevens
  4. Bunny Lines
  5. Marionette Lines
  6. Accordion Lines
  7. Smoker’s Lines

Each type of crease is created for different reasons and in different places on your face. Here is some more information on the different types of facial wrinkles.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are wrinkles that spread like an upside down tree from the corner of your eyes. The cause of these wrinkles is usually squinting.

The reason wrinkles form in this area is because you have thinner skin around your eyes making the area prone to fine lines. Outside of squinting lines can form from laughing, smiling, and crying often.

Laugh Lines

More commonly known for wrinkles or creases near your mouth. These wrinkles are caused by recurring smiling or laughing.

You can expand this definition to any type of wrinkle that forms due to laughing, such as crow’s feet.

Elevens

Elevens, frown lines, or more technically known as glabellar lines refer to creases that form in T-zone on your face that look like the number eleven. The T-zone is the area in between your eyebrows right above your nose.

Glabellar lines are wrinkles that form due to repeated squinting or crying. But, static Elevens can also give off the expression of always looking inquisitive.

Bunny Lines

If you are scrunching your nose often, then you may form bunny lines or bunnies. This type of wrinkle forms on both sides of your nose.

Bunny lines are less common than other types of creases. Yet, they likely form for someone that also has Elevens.

Marionette Lines

Marionette lines, also known as jowls or technically nasolabial folds, are deep wrinkles that span up and down your cheeks. The creases are rounded and extend from your nose all the way down to your jaw or bottom of your mouth.

Nasolabial folds form as a result of decreased skin elasticity and firmness.

Accordion Lines

Another type of line or wrinkle that forms due to laughing. Accordion lines are deep and form around the corners of your mouth.

People with less fat tissue on their cheeks may be at risk of having pronounced accordion lines.

Smoker’s Lines

Smoking is not only bad for you, but it causes deep wrinkles around your lips. Smoker’s lines form due to repeated pursing of your lips when smoking.

In addition to smoking, the use of straws can also cause these wrinkles to form around your mouth.

What Causes Wrinkles

Aging

The most common reason for wrinkles and creases is age. Over time, your skin regeneration is slower and the inner layer of your facial skin thins.

Furthermore, proteins like collagen and elastin that support your skin structure start to break down. This causes your skin to be less stretchy and appear wrinkly.

Sun

In general, it is good to get some sun and vitamin D. But, repeated sun exposure can cause skin damage by reducing the collagen in your skin due to the ultraviolet (UV) light.

Extra UV light causes your body to create abnormal elastin fibers which makes your skin thicken. Over time your skin will have a rough feel with deep creases and discoloration. This is also known as solar elastosis.

Smoking

Smoking is one of the biggest predictors of aging and wrinkles. Tobacco causes your blood vessels to become smaller in your skin. This results in less nutrients flowing across your body.

This habit can also cause your collagen production to decrease. Also, the constant pursing of your lips creates wrinkles all around your mouth.

For example, microdermabrasion provides intense exfoliation and causes your skin to look more youthful and fuller.

Neurotoxins are a dependable way to treat facial wrinkles, creases, and sagging skin. Branded neurotoxins include Botox and Dysport.

When injected in your face, your muscles are relaxed and stretched. This will result in your wrinkles also being stretched out giving you a smoother and firmed appearance.

This treatment for wrinkles produces results in erasing crow’s feet, bunny lines, and other types of facial creases.

One thing to note is that neurotoxins are not permanent. The results last three to four months. So, you will need to get the treatment frequently to maintain a youthful appearance.

Lose Wrinkle Causing Habits

Being in the sun or squinting often can cause permanent wrinkles. Therefore, try to take breaks and relax your face.

Also, if you are planning to be in the sun you want to wear more sunscreen, preferably SPR 30 or higher. Sunglasses can also help reduce the amount of squinting you do.

Positive Lifestyle

Good habits like getting enough sleep and reducing the amount you smoke can help erase wrinkles. For example, not getting enough sleep will age you faster and wrinkle earlier.

The reason why lack of sleep hurts is because less sleep releases cortisol which also breaks down collagen in your skin. Similarly, smoking reduces collagen and the flow of nutrients to your skin.

Skin Care

There are a few reasons why a skin care routine helps with wrinkles.

First, by regularly cleansing and moisturizing your skin, you’re removing the dirt, oil, and dead skin cells that can accumulate on the surface and lead to a dull complexion. This makes your skin look brighter and more firm.

Second, using an SPF will help protect your skin from sun damage, which is a major contributor to premature wrinkles.

Finally, using anti-aging products like serums and creams can help improve the appearance of wrinkles over time.
